Autumn 2017 Newsletter

Late Autumn Newsletter

We love Autumn in the shop – the colours are vibrant and the flowers are strong and full of texture and colour.  We fully embrace each season at Petal & Stalk and have loved creating autumn wreaths for customers over the past few months.  It’s most definitely a time for candles and twinkly lights and we have those bases well and truly covered!

Petal & Stalk News

In October we had the pleasure of meeting with a number of influential and inspirational figures in the floristry industry.  Team P&S took a couple of days off to go to London and immerse ourselves in the floral community which is absolutely buzzing.  First stop was the wonderfully talented and entertaining Simon Lycett. Simon counts Royal family and A-list celebrities among his regular clients and was kind enough to show us around his fabulous Lycett Towers workshop and share some of his thoughts and insights into the floristry business.  Next we met the superbly talented Shane Connolly, another Royal florist with a fabulous light-filled studio in North Kensington. Finally we were lucky enough to meet with Zita Elze – an international award winning florist who teaches classes across the world and has a wonderful flower school in Kew.
Each of the designers we met have a different style but all work in inspiring environments and each one blew us away with their knowledge, welcoming nature and willingness to spend some time with us and feed our imaginations. We visited a number of other florist shops too and managed to squeeze a little bit of retail inspiration during the days and of course a trip to London isn’t complete without a lovely meal or two out and a little champagne to celebrate our super busy wedding season.  Team P&S have worked so hard this year and it was lovely to share a little inspirational trip before the Christmas season begins!

Flower Focus

I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Australia several times and each time holds special and enchanting memories but a recent trip inspired me on a floral level. Everywhere I turned I noticed native flowers, trees & plants.  In the past, I have spent many hours in Sydney’s Botanical Gardens but this visit was my first as a florist and the new flora I noticed – it was almost like seeing the gardens for the first time!

One beautiful little red flower caught my eye in particular. I seemed to find it everywhere; in the beautifully kept flower beds in city gardens or arranged in vases on tables in luxe restaurants. Its name is Anigozanthos, but it’s most commonly known as Kangaroo Paw.

On a floristry note, it has a long vase life, is great for those who have allergies to flowers as the pollen count is very low and they come in a range of colours from yellow, orange, burnt red, rusty red, dark brown, and a limey green.

Kangaroo Paw really is beautiful – the tubular part of the flower is covered in dense hairs and really does resemble the paw of a kangaroo. The stems are similar to antlers and the flower is a pretty little star shape.  With varieties named ‘bush sunset’ and ‘gold fever’ they can also transport you to warmer climates – which is very welcome in my book when its starting to really feel a little chilly!

When I learned the meaning for this flower – uniqueness and individuality – I declared myself well and truly hooked.

We use kangaroo paw in bouquets and arrangements. They add a little special note and often can bring the colour palate together beautifully.

As they are so unusual, they look lovely in a simple tall cylindrical vase or you can add some wilder foliage like grevillea, some twisted hazel and have a natural and wild arrangement which will last a while and fill the house with warm autumn colour before the Christmas decorations come out to play!
